This year I decided to join Jenga Tanzania. Jenga Tanzania is a group that meets every Tuesday after school form 2:45 to 3:45 in the DT room. We also occasionally meet on saturdays from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The main project we are working on at the moment is building a house for u=our supervisor, Mr Patrick's Aya. As of the moment, the house has been built until about halfway and so eventually we will go to the site to compete it. Mr Patrick explained to us that the roofing of the house will be very, very expensive so in order to raise money, we were thinking of selling merchandise during ISSEA as well as selling little recycled trinkets thought the year (in festive seasons etc). Unfortunately, we didn't manage to sell the ISSEA merchandise (like keychains etc.) because ISSEA passed and the leaders did not urge us to make them (I think they forgot or were too busy) so we only designed them but were never presented with the opportunity to make them. The moment has passed and the visiting schools have gone. I am slightly saddened by the fact that we did not actualize our ideas but I think it was a learning experience for everyone. We might even be able to sell the merchandise to IST students who are interested. Other than that, we have been working on making a range of things from tin-can lanterns to glass jars for condiments and spices to decorative garden ornaments. I have really been enjoying the process as it has taught me about new way to recycle household materials and remain environmentally conscious. It has also revived my forgotten love for arts and crafts. Paint, beads, shells, crayons, pencils, pretty paper, pretty rocks, marbles, pieces of cardboard, old candy wrappers and see tins used to pour out of corner of my bedroom when I was 10 years old. My room is still filled with stuff but its mostly books and old maps, I don't do arts and crafts anymore so this was an memory inducing experience and I appreciate that very much.
