For our most recent hip hop and arts session, there was a guest speaker, a very successful man who had worked with artists as renowned as jean-micheal Basquiat. He spoke to us about how he began graffiti art as a young child - recalling some very interesting anecdotes about his spray painting endeavors with his friend in the new york underground - how they painted under cars and in train cars and other alternative spaces. He spoke about his race being an important factor that influenced the work he made because he lived in a time of high social tension surrounding race. There was one piece in particular that he told us about which involved all the death dates of civil rights activists for a particular process. He said that he created a sort of cube and then invited people to come and write the names of each on the cube and the piece was featured in an art museum. I thought this was a very interesting piece of art because it was created by the people. I would like to create an art piece that involves community creation so that it represents a more personal struggle or triumph for each individual that made it. The art group I am in decided that we want to address the issue of domestic violence among households in Tanzania and we thought that it would be more powerful if we had actual survivors or victims of domestic violence in Dar. This is where we are at the moment. We did create preliminary sketches of our own individual ideas but we haven't decided on a final design yet but we hope to do so soon.
