High school play - 12 Angry Men
Being a grade 12 theatre student my class and I got to decide (with the help of our teacher) what the high school play would be and also make important casting descisions. The play that we discussed on was 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose. We selected this play because our teacher described it as being a very intelligent piece that challenges both performers and the audience to step out of comfortable places and confront difficult realities. It also included a lot of insight on the psychological nature of argument and rhetoric. We all read the play over the break and came in with ideas for casting - which actor suits which role or perhaps, how would we like to challenge a certain actor to play a role of of what they usually would. This year, unlike in previous years we discussed to hold an audition process as opposed to providing a role to everyone interested in participating. We did this because we took particular interest I’m making sure the quality of the production (in terms of acting) was as best as we could get it to be. Deciding on these roles as well as discussing on roles for ourselves pushed us to be a more decisive group - even with roles we were not sure we wanted, we made some decisions as a leap of faith and trusted in each other and in the process that we would eventually produce something excellent. |
